DIXON LAKE

What a truly fun family Alesha and Rick have! I had such a fun time photographing this troop. We headed to Dixon Lake post-Thanksgiving weekend in the morning hoping to get some good light. And also hoping it wouldn’t be too crowded so we could cash in on the prime picture spots. Spoiler alert: we did!

Emilia and Bodhi were my star models! At the age of 5 kids are so fun to photograph. Mainly because they are old enough to understand who you are and any instructions you may give them, but are still cute and small enough to catch you by surprise so you can get some really fun childlike candids. My favorite moment was when I asked Emilia to twirl! She was a twirl pro, she didn’t even get dizzy. I would not be surprised at all if we see her name in lights at the 2018 Twirling Championship Finals.

The whole family was just so awesome to photograph. You could really tell that there is a lot of love and respect for each other there. And a lot of goofing around too because we got to play piñata! I mean who doesn’t like some good piñata time?! Emilia and Bodhi were both celebrating a 5th birthday so of course celebrations were in order! Thanksgiving is such a great time to reflect on all you are thankful for, and I’m thankful that I get to share these wonderful moments with such great families.

BEHIND THE LENS

ABOUT VANESSA

There's no place like home. Ever-focused on beauty and the thrilling art of creation; believing that photographs make time travel possible.

My grandmother gave me my most prized possession the day I graduated high school. An album filled with photographs taken over her lifetime, dating back to the 1930's. A collective chronicling her life, my parents growing up, and my childhood. It's irreplaceable and nothing will ever be as meaningful. It became my 'why' and led me to pursue a college degree in photography, hoping to give this same gift to others.
