SAN DIEGO
It feels like just yesterday that I was photographing Ashley + Nick’s Willow Creek Ranch wedding! Now here I am photographing their San Diego maternity session almost a year later! I loved photographing Ashley + Nick’s wedding, not only was it a really beautiful wedding, but Ashley + Nick are just the best people! They are so warm and friendly and they make you feel like you’ve known them for years after only a few minutes. So when they reached out to me to photograph their maternity session, I was over the moon! Not only would I get to spend more time with them, but I’d get to document another one of the most important moments in their lives.
Lately I’ve been drooling over Elizabeth Messina’s work and in particular her milk bath sessions. I’ve always wanted to try a milk bath session. I just lacked the primary components, a willing subject and a proper bath tub. Lo and behold, not only did Ashley want to do a milk bath session, she also had an amazing bath tub we could use!
The first question I get about milk baths is, “Do you really use milk?” The answer is yes! We actually ended up just using regular milk, although I’ve heard coconut and almond milk work great too. I photographed the majority of these pictures on medium format film with my Contax 645 to make them extra dreamy. So as it turns out, I LOVE milk bath sessions! They are s my new favorite thing to photograph and I can’t wait to do another one!
The following day we met to photograph another maternity session for Ashley + Nick, only this time in beautiful fields of gold. Cue Sting. The light was insanely perfect and I kept squealing in delight. I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again, while there is definitely a technical aspect to photography, a lot of it is just pure luck. And wow, did we luck out with this ooey gooey light! I had SO much fun photographing Ashley + Nick’s San Diego maternity session. I secretly want them to have another baby right after so we can do this all over again!
